Today’s picture is of Mellie, a character from Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse. Mellie was played by Miracle Laurie, who as you can see, has a most adorable smile. ^_^ This is the outfit she was wearing during her first appearance, in the second episode of season 1. After freeze-framing it about a million times, I think I got it just right. :D

Here’s another entry in my list of Fat Idols, Ellen Naomi Cohen, better known as Cass Elliot. I love her face so much. It’s hard to peg down her size, exactly, since most of the photos I could find online are of her in tent-like clothing, but I’d probably peg her at around a 24 or 26, the same size or just a little bit bigger than me. I’m thinking of forsaking my annual spring haircut so my hair will be long enough to dress as her for Halloween this year.

The other reason I love Mama Cass is that we have very similar vocal ranges, which means I can totally sing “Dream a Little Dream” and “Words of Love” really well. :D If I had time, I’d record myself singing karaoke to share it.

Hopefully I’ll make a color version of her sometime this week. ^_^

As I’ve worked on my caricaturing in the last 6 months since the ISCA Con, I haven’t really been that satisfied with the majority of my work. I think the real standout pieces I’ve done since the con are Elgin Bolling and David Dennis.

Something I’ve started to suspect since the convention is that the difference between caricatures and cartoon portraits aren’t that numerous. And I’m starting to think that I shouldn’t make the distinction at all when I approach the artwork. Because one thing I think I AM good at is cartoon portraits, be they my style or my Dollar Drawings.

Trying to approach a caricature as a gimmicky kind of thing is not really working for me. I’m not trying to belittle the art form by any means, but I feel like I honestly already have a strong point of view as a character artist, so trying to switch my gears around so drastically to try to find this other voice in me has been hard. It’s occurring to me that maybe I should try to draw caricatures from the perspective of my comics.

How would I draw this person if I were going to put them into my comics? I think my most successful caricatures of the last 6 months have been good because I seemed to have this approach in mind, but subconsciously. For example, Toru Tanaka.

Not very exaggerated, but it looks like him, and more importantly, it definitely looks like ME.

I did some sketches yesterday just to test my theory a bit, and I really think this is the direction I should go from now on.

So without further adieu, a face that I have found particularly hard to pin down: Jenna Fischer.

Much better.

I tried out some extreme exaggeration with this one. This is Chris March, a contestant on season 4 of Project Runway.

One of my quirks is that I can watch a lot of things over and over and not get tired of them. I think this embedded itself at a very early age, from the days when I would watch Sleeping Beauty over and over when I was a wee little Alex. (My sister still cannot stand to watch Sleeping Beauty.)

But for whatever reason, I can watch Home Movies, Dollhouse, and the Office pretty much any time without getting sick of it. (In fact, I think I’m due for an Office marathon.) The other day, I decided I hadn’t seen Project Runway in awhile, so I decided to watch it all from the beginning. I actually saw less of season 4 than I thought I had, and I haven’t seen season 5 at all. I’m having fun, but I think Chris is a little tired of coming by and always seeing it playing. ^_^;

A sketch of Gordon Ramsay. He has a wonderful face that’s carved, handsome, wrinkly, and doughy at the same time.

From time to time, I’d catch a few minutes of Kitchen Nightmares on TV during my breaks at Target. People yelling at each other is always entertaining on some base level, so when I discovered 31 episodes of the show are on Hulu, I began playing it as my background show while I worked on art.

Now, I’d never seen the opening to Kitchen Nightmares until a few days ago, but it’s probably one of the most epic things I’ve ever seen. If you have a few moments, go load up an episode and after the episode preview, you’ll see what I mean.

Once the preview is over, the opening begins on a pair of stainless steel kitchen doors, which EXPLODE in a flurry of pots, pans, kitchen tools, and knives. Knives start flying through the air at Gordon Ramsay, who is standing against a bullseye.

The knives embed themselves all around Ramsay, who looks completely nonplussed and then catches a knife midair, sharpens it, and flings it into the camera, shattering everything.

Did I mention this is all against Misirlou?

Epic.
