These were also my Friday update over at Alex’s Guide. As it says over there, I drew these Wednesday night while at Sunday Comix, which is when I typically will draw a comic for Friday, and since I didn’t have anything else to put up, I figure the pony party would suffice.  Then when I got home from work Thursday morning, I stayed up waaaaay too late coloring all of these.

Totally worth it.

I’ve been working for the Eye of Sauron so much lately that I don’t always have the time to draw everything I’d like during the week.  Luckily, that’s changing this coming week because I asked to cut my hours a little bit so I have an extra day off each week.  So that time will go to getting things done!

Anyways, this pony party was inspired by Yamino, whose tumblr exploded with stuff about My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic! the other day.  She drew pony version of the Panty & Stocking cast, which made me want to draw some ponies too.  I haven’t actually seen any FIM yet, so that’s why my ponies look rather different. ^_^

The full piece for the cover of Garanos Volume III.  It’s been redrawn from a panel that appeared in the comic, and this version is actually a full 11 x 17 inches if I ever want to make a poster out of it.

As the first bit of art I actually got done after my Week of Rest, I’m really happy with how this cover turned out.  I’d had thumbnail sketches in my sketchbook done that never really captured the gestures and mood I wanted, but when I actually sat down with the full sheet of paper to attempt a final drawing, it came out pretty easily, and on the first try, no less!

I wanted to attempt some more interesting lighting than I usually use, so I went for an extreme-overhead light source, which I think also helps with the overall mood of this piece.

The color-shifting effect is a seperate layer with the Blending Mode set to Color, with rust red, purple, and blue painted in by hand with a soft brush.  It’s set to about 45% opacity, so the ‘natural’ colors are just tinted a bit, rather than have them be very very saturated with the color overlay.  It produced a very nice effect that I really like with the symbolism of Ethre, Gara, and Styx’s respective colors.  She has this choice between the two men presented before her, and yet both are equally a part of her, and important to her in many distinct ways.

All in all, very evocative, and I’m proud to have this as the cover for the final chapter of Garanos.

Oh, and I gave my friends Lord of the Rings valentines when I was a senior in high school, just for laughs.

So I got the idea to make some Garanos valentines.  I couldn’t think of very many plot-relevant corny phrases, so I just have these three.

The 4th valentine concept, which I didn’t get to, was Gharsena running away from a fireball with the caption “Hope your Valentine’s Day is a BLAST!”  Hurr hurr.

It was a good excuse to draw both Maryoku and Geilen’s red lacy outfit again.  I’m also in love with the expressions in the second valentine. XD  I didn’t go too crazy with shading on these, since they were just for fun, but I’m learning lately that I generally don’t need to go too crazy with the shading in regular comics anyway.

I was looking through my folder full of old Garanos vote incentive and found this.  A screencap of yesteryear!  I think this was still Photoshop 7 or 8.  This page, 153, was posted on August 1oth, 2007.

It really shows me how much my process has changed.  Apparently back then, I was doing backgrounds before anything else, and I would paint backgrounds directly on a single layer instead of splitting the panels up into different layers like I do now.  I remember being quite proud of the painting in this panel at the time.

A recent vote incentive for Garanos, this is an assortment of sketches I did while I drew the latter half of Part 16. Most of them are practice drawings before I put them down on the actual comic page, to test out proportions and layout and such.  As you can see, I tried out a few different approaches to Garanos holding up Geilen, but ending up doing something simpler in the real comic.  And of course, there are a couple of page thumbnails where I tested out the whole page layout first.
