Commission: Emerald Dragon
March 16th, 2009. Categories: Commissions. This was the first time in many years I’d drawn an animal, and certainly the first time I seriously drew a dragon. I don’t generally pride myself on my ability to draw animals; I can do passable impressions of cats due to being cat-crazy as a small child and drawing almost nothing but for a long time. But other than cats, horses, and quadrupedal mammals that resemble cats and horses, I’m not big on animals. So this piece definitely pushed me far out of my comfort zone.
Which is both a good and a bad thing. It was interesting trying something new, but it also let me know that for commissions, I need to stick to humans. (Maybe humans riding unicorns with fairy kitties.) It was a little annoying that I had to do this challenging piece for free, but thus was my resolution to get some serious pseudo-commissions under my belt so I had something to show people.
The request was certainly an interesting enough concept, though the limits of my skills resulted in a less-than-ideal execution.
